HO WEST DISTRICT ASSEMBLY MARKS 41ST FARMERS’ DAY AT AWUDOME KWANTA

The Ho West District Assembly on Thursday, 27th November 2025, celebrated the 41st Farmers’ Day at Awudome Kwanta to recognise hardworking farmers who continue to play a pivotal role in the district’s agricultural development. This year’s celebration was held under the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”

Mr. Gerson Aggor, a native of Awudome Kwanta, was adjudged the 2025 District Best Farmer. He cultivates 25 acres of maize, 6 acres of rice, 9 acres of cocoa, 7 acres of cassava, 5 acres of okro, 2 acres of garden eggs, and 1 acre of banana, and also rears 53 ducks and 45 local fowls. For his outstanding performance, he received a motorbike, wellington boots, a certificate, cutlasses, and five bags of NPK fertilizer.

In total, 17 farmers were honoured in various categories, including Best Livestock Farmer, Best Crop Farmer, District Best Secondary School in Practical Agriculture, District Best JHS, District Best Primary School, District Best Faith-Based Organization, Best Innovative Farmer, Best Female Farmer, Best Differently-Abled Farmer, Best Assembly Member in Farming, Best Assembly Staff in Farming, Best Youth Farmer, Best Tree Crop Farmer, and Best Agric Worker. Awardees received items such as motorbikes, knapsack sprayers, cutlasses, wellington boots, television sets, fridges, wheelbarrows, wire mesh, and gas cookers, all intended to motivate farmers and enhance productivity.

Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Francis Profer Dusey, commended farmers for their enormous contributions to food security, employment creation, and economic growth in the district and the nation at large. He explained that the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” underscores the need to strengthen local food production, encourage the consumption of locally grown foods by “eating what we grow and growing what we eat” to boost the local economy, and adopt measures that ensure long-term sustainability in the agricultural sector.

Hon. Dusey further encouraged the youth to embrace agriculture as a dignified and profitable venture, emphasizing that modern agriculture presents opportunities in production, agro-processing, value addition, marketing, and agribusiness.

The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Seth Asuo, commended farmers for their resilience and dedication to advancing agriculture in the district. He reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to providing technical guidance and extension services, urging farmers to embrace the Feed Ghana initiative and adopt modern farming practices and technologies to enhance productivity.

Delivering the address on behalf of the Member of Parliament, Mr. Adom Worlasi celebrated the gallant farmers for their unwavering dedication to feeding the nation. He highlighted several development interventions undertaken by the MP to improve livelihoods across the district and noted that the MP supported this year’s celebration with three motorbikes, which were presented to deserving award winners. Mr. Worlasi expressed appreciation to all stakeholders whose efforts continue to advance the government’s development agenda.

The Chief of Kwanta, Togbe Adzima Buasapa X, highlighted the increasing threat of climate change to agriculture, citing erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and soil degradation as major challenges affecting productivity. He called for stronger environmental protection measures, increased support for farmers, and the adoption of modern farming methods.

The chairman for the occasion and Paramount Chief of the Awudome Traditional Area, Togbega Addai Kwasi Dzani XIII, congratulated all award winners and encouraged continued dedication to agriculture as a viable and respected profession capable of transforming lives and communities.

In his remarks, the District Best Farmer, Mr. Aggor, on behalf of the awardees, expressed gratitude to the government and the Assembly for recognizing their efforts. They pledged to remain committed and to inspire others, especially the youth, to embrace agriculture as a dignified and rewarding profession.

The celebration also featured an agricultural exhibition showcasing a variety of local produce, including plantain, cocoa, cassava, groundnuts, rice, coconuts, vegetables, and livestock. The displays highlighted the rich agricultural potential and diversity of the Ho West District.
