The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, together with the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Ángel Lossada, has commissioned new water systems aimed at improving access to potable water in selected communities within the Ho West District of the Volta Region.

The commissioning ceremony, held on 9th October 2025 at Saviefe Agorkpo, brought together dignitaries including Volta Regional Minister, officials from the Spanish Embassy, the Chief Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Ho West District Chief Executive, representatives from the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, the representative of the Member of Parliament, traditional authorities, staff of CWSA, staff of the Regional Coordinating Council, staff of Ho West District Assembly, Assembly Members, and community residents.

In his welcome address, the District Chief Executive of Ho West, Hon. Prof. Francis Dusey, expressed appreciation to the Government of Spain and implementing partners for their continuous support in enhancing the district’s water infrastructure.
He stated that the water systems would address the persistent water challenges in beneficiary communities and improve the living standards of residents. The DCE reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that every community in Ho West has access to clean and safe drinking water as part of efforts to promote sustainable development.

In his address, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, described the project as a transformative intervention that will greatly improve the lives of the people of Saviefe and surrounding communities. He expressed appreciation to the government and people of Spain for their sustained partnership in promoting access to safe water in Ghana.

The Minister revealed that the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), together with other key stakeholders, will soon embark on a comprehensive monitoring exercise to assess the progress of all ongoing and stalled development projects. This, he said, is to ensure that no government project in the region is left abandoned. He further urged beneficiary communities to take ownership of the water facilities to guarantee sustainability, emphasizing that community ownership of projects is key to protecting public investments.

His Excellency Ángel Lossada, the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, described the projects as a symbol of friendship and collaboration between Spain and Ghana. He emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and the new water systems will significantly improve the quality of life for residents while fostering continued cooperation between the two nations.

The Regional Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Mr Sylvester Eyramh praised the successful completion of 18 pipe water systems across 35 localities in four District Assemblies—Ho Municipal, Ho West, Adaklu, and Agotime Ziope—under the Ghana–Spain Debt Swap for Development Programme (DSDP).
He noted that the investment aims not only to supply safe drinking water but also to promote public health, eliminate waterborne diseases, and drive socio-economic growth. He commended all partners for their commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by 2030.
The Director appealed to communities to protect the water infrastructure, avoid illegal connections, and promptly report any challenges to ensure the project’s sustainability.

The Chief of Saviefe Agorkpo, Fiator Alfred Agboba, expressed profound gratitude to the Government of Ghana, the Government of Spain, and all implementing partners for their support. He noted that the project would greatly enhance the well-being of the people and pledged the community’s full commitment to maintaining and safeguarding the facility for future generations.

The commissioning ceremony marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to expand access to safe and reliable water supply in the Volta Region. It further strengthened the partnership between Ghana and Spain in promoting sustainable development and improving the living conditions of rural communities.
