ENERGY COMMISSION COMMISSIONS IMPROVED INSTITUTIONAL COOK STOVE KITCHEN AT KPEDZE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

On Tuesday, 24th September 2024, the Energy Commission commissioned an improved institutional Cook Stove Kitchen facility, built for Kpedze Senior High School (KPESCO). This initiative is part of the Commission’s commitment to promoting sustainable management and the utilization of renewable energy resources as well as their Social Corporate Responsibility.

Ing. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, the Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission noted that Kpedze Senior High School was selected to benefit from this state-of-the-art improved cook stove after emerging as winners of the 2022 Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge, organized by the Energy Commission. He explained that the challenge aims to raise awareness and provide education on renewable energy among senior high schools and technical institutions across the country.

Mr. Amonoo-Neizer disclosed that the new kitchen would help the school reduce fuel consumption, drastically reduce emissions generated, and minimize the harmful smoke produced by the inefficient biomas cook stoves the school was using . He expressed hope that the kitchen would serve as a model for other institutions to adopt, thereby contributing to the reduction of carbon footprints through improved energy practices.

The Board Chairman of Energy Commission, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu disclosed that the commissioning of the project marks a significant step towards sustainable energy use, health protection and environmental conversation for the Kpedze Senior High School and the wider community.

Hon. Ernest Victor Apau, the District Chief Executive of Ho West, lauded the initiative as a critical investment in the future of sustainable energy resources. He also outlined various initiatives and projects undertaken by the Assembly in the school to mitigate climate change, enhance environmental sustainability, and improve sanitation and infrastructure.

The Paramount Chief of Kpedze, Togbega Atridom V, raised serious concerns about the adverse effects of traditional cooking methods on both health and the environment. He emphasized that with the introduction of this improved technology, less firewood would be required, which would not only protect the health of the people but also help preserve the forest and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Mrs Enestina Doris Peniana, the Headmistress of the school expressed her gratitude for the construction of the facility. She emphasized that the project will promote a healthier, eco-friendly environment and enhanced the safety of kitchen staff. She also highlighted some of the school’s ongoing challenges, such new school bus, construction of classrooms, and renovations of existing school facilities.
